Dr. Sylvia Sloan Black


Dr. Sylvia Sloan Black recently retired as an assistant professor of management at the School of Business and Economics, North Carolina A&T State University.  A member of the Hillside Class of 1964, she earned her doctoral degree in strategic management from Columbia University.  She also holds an MBA from the University of Kansas, an MS in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BS in physics from Howard University where she earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa.

Sylvia taught Strategic Management, International Business and Introduction of Business to undergraduates and students in the Masters of Science in Management program.  Prior to joining the faculty at North Carolina A&T, she was a faculty member at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she taught core courses in strategic management and strategic innovation in both the undergraduate and MBA programs.  She also taught an MBA elective in international strategic alliances and an MBA elective focusing on doing business in Africa that culminated in a two week trip to Africa.  She has also taught math at Fayetteville State University, and business education for Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri.  In the corporate world, she was an operations manager for the Pacific Trade Group in Waipahu, Hawaii; and a financial analyst for Department of the Army, West Point, NY.  She has published articles on executive leadership, competition, strategic alliances, and training leaders in the Journal of High Technology Management, the Journal of Management, Organization Management Journal, Managerial and Decision Economics, the Academy of Management Executive, and International Journal of Learning and Change.

Sylvia’s professional affiliations include the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, the Academy of International Business, and the National Black MBA Association.  She is also a member of the National Council of Negro Women and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Sylvia was the first African-American and first female chairperson of the Board of Visitors of the United States Army War College, Carlisle, PA.  For her service, she was awarded the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Award, the third highest honor the United States Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian.

Sylvia is an active community volunteer having served as a Red Cross volunteer, a Girl Scout leader, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer, an officer of the Chapel Hill Service League and as President of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  She currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and as a mentor in the Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate Program run through the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System.
