Renee Nixon - Ms Hillside High School Alumni 2007

Renee Nixon is a native of Durham, NC, and a 1989 graduate of Hillside High School. While at Hillside, she was very active in many different clubs and organizations. She was a flag girl in the world famous Marching Hornets and she was a member of the award winning drama club under the direction of Donna Buie and Wendell Tabb. She also was a member of the computer club, yearbook staff, Future Business Leaders of America, student council parliamentarian, and broadcaster’s club.

While at Hillside, Renee was also involved in other community organizations including Jack & Jill of America, Holy Cross Catholic Church’s High School of Religion, and Girl Scout Troop 801. Renee was a debutante in the Zafa Temple Debutante Ball.

After graduating from Hillside, Renee attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro where she graduated from in 1994. It was at A&T, that her love of movies and writing came together. After reading a review of Eddie Murphy’s movie, Boomerang, Renee was very upset that a critic gave the film an ‘F’.  Her teacher, Mrs. Wiggins, told her that most movie critics were older, white men and that they didn’t always get the black perspective. Armed with an idea, Nixon set out to become a nationally recognized movie critic. She started small at the A&T Register and after graduation she worked for a small paper, The Urban Journal. She stopped writing for a short time and joined Public Allies. Public Allies is a non-traditional leadership program for young adults. After the break, she began work with Plugged.TV, as their movie critic. Renee can be seen on Plugged, Saturday nights at 7 pm on Raleigh’s Public Access channel and for about a year on WQOK-FM on Monday afternoons at 5:30 pm.

Renee has written several plays. Four of her plays were read at the National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Association of Black Journalist, and an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Durham.  In her spare time, Renee enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, watching movies and dancing. She is currently writing her first romance novel.
