Annie Bell Green - Class of 1927- Oldest Hillside Alumnus
Mrs. Green married Samuel Green, Sr. in 1929, and was married for over forty-one years. Mr. and Mrs. Green owned one of only a few African American tobacco farms in Durham County. Mr. Green passed away in 1970. To, their union four children were born: Samuel Green, Jr. (deceased), Rostella Green Pierce (Oakland, California), Leo A. Green (deceased), and Cleo E. Green (deceased).
Ms. Annie BeWs loving family includes - one daughter, fourteen
grandchildren (many she raised to adulthood), twenty-three great grandchildren and counting, and several other people she
adopted to be her own.
She made her profession
as a Seamstress. Mrs. Green began sewing when
she was only eleven years of age. She graciously serviced her clients with her tailored creations. Her first
tailor shop was opened in Butner, North Carolina at
Camp Butner and serviced World War II Soldiers and their families. She later relocated her business to Durham on Pettigrew
Street and then to Main Street and loved having her own business 1/ AB Green Seamstress Shop". Mrs. Green took pride
in the ability to look at a dress in the store window and go to her shop and sketch the garment, cut a pattern of it,
and create it.
Mrs. Green joined St. Matthew CM.E. Church (Russell Memorial) at an early age. She was member when the first church burned down on
Matthew Street before it was rebuilt at it's current location. She is the oldest member of the church at this time. She is a member of the Stewardess Board, Missionary
Society, Lay Council, and Floral Club. Her favorite saying is "Let Go, and
Let God".
She has belonged to numerous organizations in
her lifetime and is presently, even at the
tender age of 100 years old, a member of the Good
Neighbor Club of Gorman, The Tailors Association of Durham, and Lyon Park Rose Garden Club.
Mrs. Green is a gracious, loving lady that has seen great changes through her lifetime. We celebrate her accomplishments and her 100th
Birthday!
