The Greatest Game Ever Played

Before Jordan, Worthy or Dominique came on the scene,

the most publicized high school player was future North Carolina

and NBA All- Star Charlie Scott

Who came to Durham to play against the legendary

Pony Express” Led by the great “Goat” Bullock and a team of

supposedly “have nots”

Charlie’s school, Laurinburg Institute, was in the middle 60’s

“Oak Hill and all the other basketball schools in one place

They had the nation’s top players, such as Earl Manigault

Jimmy Walker and even Sam Jones there to help set the pace

1966 was Laurinburg’s greatest basketball team ever with

Charlie leading the way

When they entered Hillside’s Hornet’s nest on that funky

fateful day

The great Scott coming to Hillside brought the top white

coaches from around the nation

There to see the next superstar’s coronation

The game looked like a mismatch with Goat Bullock as

Hillside’s tallest player at 6’ 3” and Charlie being Laurinburg’s

shortest at 6’4”

With Laurinburg’s players doing an array of 360 slams during

the warm-ups, shaking up the hard wood floor

The “Pony Express” with captains George Outlaw and June

Harris proved to be the “funkiest team alive”

Because everyday part of their curriculum was listening

to the funky D.J. “Dr. Jive”

When Parliament said “Make My Funk The P-Funk” they

were talking about Danny Mac and the “Pony Express”

Because when it came to funk on the basketball court they

were simply the best

As the game started, Hillside’s ball boy, future NBA star

John Lucas, smiled with glee

Because seeing the “Pony Express” play showed him what

he was destined to be

Goat Bullock’s 41 points, 25 rebounds and 13 assists

embarrassed the Great Scott

Goat showed that in the Hornet’s nest he is the ruler of this lot

Goat showed that he was the best on the biggest stage

Because as Coach Easterling, Coach Blunt and Coach Bradshaw

said Goat Bullock was the best of any age

Hillside’s starting line-up of Danny Mac, June, Outlaw,

Michael Hayes and Goat Bullock were simply out of sight

Because they smoked Laurinburg and kept the funk going

all night

The Hillside victory 110 to 106 was more than just a game

After this North Carolina basketball would never be the same

God Bless The Pony Express
