Deborah George Giles
DEBORAH
GEORGE GILES is a Durham native who attended Durham Public Schools,
where she graduated from Hillside High School. She is a licensed Registered
Nurse with a B. S. Degree in Nursing from A & T State University,
Greensboro, N.C. She is the Director of the Department of Equal
Opportunity/Equity Assurance for the City of Durham, where she monitors efforts
to ensure women and minorities successfully compete for city contracts. Deborah
has worked in the substance abuse field for twenty-four years. She served as
the Program Director for the Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in Butner, N. C.
until 1992. She is certified on the state and national levels as a Substance
Abuse Counselor and Clinical Addictions Specialist. She owned and operated a
substance abuse treatment practice until 2002. She and her sister established a
non-profit organization, the Long Leaf Institute of Educational Development in
2001 and she now provides training and consulting services for the business.
Deborah is known as a
community activist and served on the Durham County Board of Commissioners from
1990-1994. She has and continues to serve on
many
community boards and commissions and has been honored on several occasions for
community service, including recognition by both the City and County of Durham.
She was appointed by Governor James B. Hunt to the N. C. Mental Health Study
Commission, serving until 1995 and served a gubernatorial appointment to the N.
C. Commission on Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention.
