George B. Smith was educated in the Durham Public School
System where he was commonly known by the nickname "BB" Smith. He was
active in sports while attending Hillside High School lettering in both
Football and Track. After graduation from Hillside he received a football
scholarship to North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. He
was a two-year starter as defensive corner/half back and safety. He graduated
from NC Central in 1969 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration
with emphasis in Management and Economics. George accepted a position with
Allstate Insurance Company in Charlotte NC, in Public Affairs and was
eventually promoted to Division Personnel Manager and assisted Allstate with
implementing their national Affirmative Action Program in 1972.
In 1975 he was given an appointment as a
Special Agent with The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where he served in
a number of assignments, including a sensitive special assignment in an
undercover capacity in New York that targeted Organized Criminal Enterprises.
As a result of his efforts he was promoted to a Supervisory Special Agent in
1985 and was transferred to FBI Headquarters in Washington DC and also served
as an instructor at the FBI Academy, Quantico Virginia. He was certified as a
Master firearms instructor and would provide firearms demonstrations for the
FBI when requested. In 1988, George was transferred to the Houston Texas
Regional office as the Program Manager for Drugs and Organized Crime squads. He
was active in several major accomplishments involving disrupting and
dismantling the drug enterprise of Columbia’s infamous Drug Kingpin Pablo
Escobar. In addition he also supervised investigations involving Violent Crimes
such as kidnappings, extortions and fugitive matters. He received several
commendations from various US Attorney Generals as well as Directors of the
FBI.
George ‘s assignments in the FBI included the
following:
After retiring from the FBI in May 2000, he
was offered a position with Shell Oil Company in Corporate Security as a Senior
Security Representative and conducted internal investigations regarding
integrity matters primarily with Shell’s senior staff. In April 2005, he was
promoted to Manager of the Business Integrity Department and currently manages
a staff of investigators that conduct investigations for Shell in the United
States, Canada and Latin America. George’s position has taken him all over the
United States as well as to other parts of the globe such as Africa, South
America, Europe and Asia.
George is a member of The Society of Former
Special Agents of the FBI and is one of their past Presidents. He also servers
as a member of the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers of the Greater Houston
area and is currently the Chairman of The Men’s Ministry at St. Paul Baptist
Church in The Woodlands, Texas. In 2002 at the request of US Senators Phil Gram
and Kay Bailey Hutchinson he was nominated and served on the
Selection/Evaluation Committee for the appointment of the United States
Marshall for the four districts in Texas. His hobbies include reading, chess,
problem solving, quiet walks, spending time with friends and family and
enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
