School Philosophy

Since opening in 1930, the Harris Barber College has been dedicated to training students in theory and practical skills necessary to become barbers in the state of North Carolina. The school believes in developing the student's integrity and motivation in order for them to become successful barber-stylist. Every effort is made to ensure that each student receives well-balanced training, responding to the need of the industry.

HBC

HBC follows the curriculum suggested by the State of North Carolina. A student must complete 1528 hours of classroom and practical training in less than nine months. Subject covered include, but are not limited to:

»  NC Barber Law »  Chemistry
»  Ethics »  Men's & Women's Hair Styling
»  Traditional Barber Course »  Permanent Waving
»  Management »  Hair Coloring

Textbook theory is tested on a weekly basic and a licensed instructor always checks practical work on the clinic floor. Practical experience gained from the public coming to the institute for hair care services is a strong point of this course of instruction. Students receive "hand on" training, thereby putting textbook theory into practice.

Course Objective

The ultimate objective of Harris Barber College is to prepare student to pass the North Carolina State Board Examination. This qualifies them to practice barbering in the state as licensed barbers.

An additional objective is to provide training that enables graduates to function effectively in today's full-service salons. This requires that student be trained in the basics of every service performed in salons today. It is our desire that students be exposed to sound business practices.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission to the Institute, an enrolling student must meet the following requirements:

bulletAn interview and acceptance by the school.
bulletProspective students must have obtained a minimum of an eighth grade education or a GED certificate.
bulletStudents may start school on any Tuesday, providing an open position is available.
bulletThe Student Enrollment Agreement must be signed prior to starting date.

State Requirements

Upon graduation, application is made to the North Carolina State Board of Barber Examiners to take the required certification exam. A theory and practical examination is given by the state. There is no apprenticeship program in North Carolina. After successful completion of the examination, a student is licensed to practice in any registered barbershop or salon in the State of North Carolina. Advice is available if a student wishes to apply for licensing in other states.

Instructors

There are two full time and one part time instructors assigned to the school. The lead instructor is responsible for the floor supervision in addition to Tobias McLean. All three personally supervise students as they interact with the public.

School Director

Tobias McLean holds a Master Barber and Cosmetology Licenses from the state of North Carolina. He has been an active barber-stylist for more than 20 years. Harris Barber College was founded in 1930, Tobais assumed current Director leadership of the in early 1994.

Pervious Training

Harris Barber College will accept all hours approved by the North Carolina State Barber Board for credit  towards completion of the required 1528 hours of instruction.

Placement

HBC maintains a placement service to assist graduates in obtaining employment. However, HBC cannot guarantee a position. Many shops and salons recognize the high level of quality training the graduates receive and regularly contact the institute for employee. HBC placement services, over the years, has been extremely successful.
